Tips: Making a Fire Claim

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

fire damaged home No damage remediation should begin until the entire area has been photographed and documented. Call Us!

A fire in your home or office can leave you with a million thoughts running through your mind. The fire restoration process is fairly straightforward, but you want to make sure to do everything in the right order so that you get the most money you can when you file your insurance claim. Here are some tips for how to handle the process well.

  1. Make Your Calls

One of the first things you should do is make the right calls. The company that carries your fire insurance needs to know about the damage to your property, as quickly as possible. It is also advisable to call a fire remediation specialist, like SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Fresno, & Stafford/Missouri City North. The sooner they can arrive on the scene, the better, particularly if you need emergency cleanup to prevent secondary damage. They can also help you itemize costs, which may be helpful when filing your claim.

  1. Secure Your Home

The insurance adjuster will likely check to make sure you have taken the correct measures to protect your property from further damage. The more damage it sustains, the more it costs to fix it. If you do not board up windows and doors, or if you leave holes in your roof or skylights open, the insurance company may not cover part of the damages as this looks like neglect of the property.

  1. Leave Damage Alone

It may seem counterintuitive to delay the beginning of the fire restoration process until professional help arrives, but that's exactly what you need to do. Any smoke cleaning you do may cause more damage. If it doesn't, it can still hurt your chances of getting a full settlement, because the insurance company is not going to pay for damage the adjuster doesn't see. No damage remediation should begin until the entire area has been photographed and documented.

A large part of filing a claim is knowing how to prove the damage. By following these three tips, you can increase the likelihood of getting a settlement with your insurance company that covers most, if not all, of the fire restoration services you require.

If You Think You Have Mold, Don’t Clean It Yourself!

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

mold wall See something like this growing in your home or business? Don't mess with it - give us a call instead!

We often get calls from homeowners who’ve tried treating a mold problem with a store-bought spray or with bleach, only to have the mold return. What they don’t realize is that they’ve spread potentially dangerous mold spores inside their home and used a cleaner that isn’t meant for the type of material where the mold is growing. The result is a situation much worse than if they had called us first.

It’s Best Not to Mess With Mold

If you think you have mold, the best thing you can do is leave it alone and call us to come take a look. We’ll be there right away. If it’s not mold, which is sometimes the case, we’ll let you know, and we won’t charge you anything for the visit. It’s a courtesy our customers really appreciate.

If we do suspect you have mold, then we’ll help you get mold sampling and testing to determine if the mold is toxic or a garden-variety type that presents low health risk. Depending on the results, we’ll put together a mold remediation plan and cost estimate for you to consider.

We’re Certified to Safely Remove Mold

Once a customer approves the plan and estimate, we get straight to work. We’re certified to remediate mold from homes and commercial businesses in the safest way possible. If the mold is toxic, we seal off contaminated areas from the rest of your house or business, so spores do not spread. Using special HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers, we clean and disinfect the entire area. We carefully remove affected materials, dispose of them properly and replace damaged areas with new materials, restoring your home or business back to its previous condition. When we get done, it's "Like it never even happened.”

Call SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno Before You Touch That Mold

All it takes is a quick phone call to save yourself from possible health risks and spreading more mold in your home or business. We deal with mold all the time and are well-trained to handle it, so you can trust us to do the work right. Because we’re a local business, we can be there quickly to give you an evaluation and recommendations for moving forward. Call (281) 412-6211 anytime, day or night.

Will Your Insurance Cover Mold Damages to your home?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Moldy wall SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno is Here to Help with mold damage found in your home or business.

Understanding Mold damage and Insurance

Fungus growth is typical in Houston and mold damage can interrupt your business. Will your commercial insurance cover the expense? The answer depends on your policy and the circumstances.

Understand Commercial Mold Insurance Basics

There are several different types of insurance that business owners should carry in case of mold damage. Each is applicable in various circumstances:

• Liability – Might cover another’s mold remediation expenses if you are at fault
• Property Damage – Pays to repair mold damages to your property
• Worker’s Compensation – Covers the costs of mold-related illnesses for employees

Mold coverage and claims are tricky. Fungus growth is a naturally occurring phenomenon. Insurance providers have become reluctant to cover claims related to mold infestations in situations when claimants ignored their responsibility to perform proper maintenance and repairs.

Check Your Policy

If your policy dates back far enough, you may already have adequate insurance, but it is possible your insurance company added mold damage to the list of exclusions. Additional mold insurance may be required.

If you do carry mold insurance, you still have a responsibility to care for the property and keep it maintained. Insurance providers do not want to pay for unnecessary repairs. Failure to have your location inspected regularly or refusal to repair known leaks in the plumbing may disqualify a claim.

Know the Differences in Claims

If you have discovered excessive fungus growth around your place of business, you may file a primary claim. Essentially, you seek costs for yourself directly related to your situation. An adjuster looks at the case, and your insurance company determines if the claim has merit.

In some instances, you may need to file a third-party liability claim. If you are a landlord or are responsible for a property in some way, tenants may sue for damages related to mold. Your insurance policy could cover some of the costs of your legal expenses or pay mold related expenses for your clients.

Get Your Business Inspected

Regular inspections identify mold, point out trouble spots, and keep your insurance policy in good standing. A professional mold remediation company helps you maintain your property and reduces the risk of infestation.

Cleanup After Sewage Backup in Your Home

Your home can get threatened very quickly and with little warning. Hazardous conditions like sewage backing up into the house can present an immediate health risk to the occupants of the house but also require urgent attention to keep the situation from getting worse. Our team has the experience and availability to provide fast responses to emergencies like these with the training in biohazard cleanup to make a difference quickly.

Sewage backup cleanup for your home is critical as the situation continues to get worse without the appropriate intervention of trained professionals like ours with the tools to assess the situation and clean up the mess. As a homeowner, your concerns are the cleanliness of the affected surfaces and materials after an incident like this, but our SERVPRO team has advanced technology, equipment, and training to thoroughly clean, disinfect, deodorize, and restore affected areas of the property.

There are often contaminants, bacteria, and other hazards present in raw sewage backing up into your home. Whether from a septic tank or a city sewer line, pathogens are always present in this black water. Our technicians have unique training in biohazard cleanup to utilize the appropriate personal protective equipment and use the right tools to clean up the area quickly. Affected materials exposed to the contaminated water must often get removed and later replaced with new materials. The framework of the affected areas must get thoroughly dried to ensure that no moisture persists. With present bacteria likely in the lingering moisture, mold growth or potential health effects could result from inadequately dried materials.

Our SERVPRO team has deodorization equipment like our thermal foggers to help remove the nasty odor left behind by the sewage backup. While many of the exposed soft materials have gotten removed from the area, those that remain can also get deodorized with the use of this thermal fogging equipment.

Sewage is nothing that a homeowner should attempt to remove or handle on their own. Give our experienced SERVPRO biohazard team a call right away to help you resolve this emergency at (281) 412-6211.

All employees undergo extensive water restoration training and certification.

SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno is the leading cleanup and restoration company in the United States. One of the primary reasons for this success is the quality people found throughout our Franchise organization. Quality people have two major attributes, they have a positive attitude, and they are technically skilled.   These attributes are vital for both success in the SERVPRO system, and in the quest to always provide the highest quality service.

But these attributes become even more important when you consider that almost every customer our Franchise encounter has just experienced some form of traumatic, life-altering event. A home saturated by water, a business damaged by fire, a structure overrun with mold. When dealing with these types of crises, the customer wants to know that they are dealing with a professional, not someone who lacks training or is willing to take shortcuts that could lead to even more problems in the future.

Instead, they want to know that the people caring for them are knowledgeable of the latest industry standards, are trained to follow standard restoration methods and processes, will take the time to answer their questions and meet their needs, and will put their life back in order as quickly as possible. They want SERVPRO Professionals.

Why Do Home Fires Increase in the Winter?

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

Extinguisher If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away.

When the temperatures begin dropping, the likelihood of a house fire occurring begins to rise.

It is important to know the reasons why home fires increase in the winter as well as ways to prevent fires, both in the wintertime and year-round.

  • An Increase in Cooking
Cooking—something most of us do every day—is consistently the top cause of home fires across the country, and this is not something that changes in the winter. In fact, it typically rises even more due to an increase in baking and general stove usage around the holidays.
  • The Risk of Heaters
Heating-related issues are the second-highest cause of house fires, with space heaters being the most common culprit. These fires are typically from flammable objects being too close to the heating source or a space heater tipping over when it is not equipped with an automatic shutoff.
  • Candles and Decorations
Anywhere there is an open flame there is an opportunity for a house fire to begin, which is why the use of decorative and religious candles can also lead to an uptick in house fires. Winter decorations can also be hazardous, with strings of lights and other electronics that are not frequently used being major culprits for fires.

Ways to Prevent Wintertime Fires

When it comes to house fires, practicing prevention is the best way to be prepared. Here are some general fire safety tips to remember year-round, but especially during the winter:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away. We are leaders in restoration and can help you recover quickly after a fire occurs.

Prepare for the Unexpected with our ERP!

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Digital file SERVPRO's Emergency READY Profile Plan (ERP) App has been developed to help you be ready for whatever happens.

It is critical to remember that preparation is the best defense for your home or business against disastrous storm damages. While it is not always practical to foresee damages, having specific preparations in place, in case of an emergency, can significantly reduce the time it takes for remediation to occur. After all, "Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation."

No matter if you're a homeowner or a business owner, "SERVPRO's Emergency READY Profile Plan (ERP) App has been developed to help you be ready for whatever happens." The ERP allows you to "create individual emergency ready profiles for each of your properties, saving you time when minutes count." This app can "help you minimize how water or fire damage affect your home or business."

When you download the ERP app, it is essential to enter detailed information about your properties before any damages occur to them. Doing this allows you to "minimize business interruption" because it provides an "immediate plan of action."

Using the SERVPRO ERP app during an emergency is a simple process. Merely tap on the type of damage you want to report, and a request for remediation is immediately sent to us as a result. Without having to worry about the hassle of knowing your address, email, phone number, or insurance adjuster, we can head straight to your property, to save you valuable minutes of time.

To further the effectiveness of ERP, you can schedule an appointment with Kimberly Robb, our SMM sales and marketing Manager to fully log your property into our files. We can visit your home or business to create a blueprint of the physical building, making remediation much quicker. From there, we can assess your property for strengths and weaknesses, allowing our techs to immediately go where they need to if an emergency occurs.

Save Your Data From Water Damage With The Assistance of SERVPRO!

In the digital age, your personal data is more important than ever, however, it is also extremely fragile. Water damage can corrupt the data stored on your precious electronics and electronic media. Your paper files, too, are at risk of being completely destroyed by water. Books and documents can be rendered unreadable if left in water for too long. If you have electronics and documents at risk of being lost, then call the professionals at SERVPRO to get on the path to data preservation.

Whether it is paper, electronics, or electronic media, we are experienced in a variety of techniques for saving your property. However, not all types of media were created equal, and some are more difficult than others to save. Paper documents and books are often the most difficult type of media to preserve in the case of water damage. They must be completely frozen and dried through sublimation, where the water affecting the paper is turned from ice into gas.

It should be noted that non-SERVPRO specialty electronics cleaning/repairs services will likely be needed in addition to the services SERVPRO can provide.

REOPENING YOUR BUSINESS

SERVPRO disinfecting a facility Here to Help Disinfect

As businesses are preparing to reopen, it is important to correctly clean and disinfect.  The type of needed disinfecting is a higher level than your day to day cleaning.  Disinfecting is vital to protect your employees and clients.  Though businesses are reopening, the threat of COVID-19 is still present and in order to reduce the risk of further spread is to take steps to disinfect your buildings.  No building is too small or too large for these services.  The experts at SERVPRO of  Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno are trained to handle disasters.  Our Large Loss team specializes in disasters such as the Coronavirus Pandemic.   Our technicians are trained in Biohazard cleanup, Blood-born pathogen and virus trained, and IICRC certified.  Additionally, our technicians are fully trained in proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

What our reopening cleaning includes

SERVPRO reopening cleaning and disinfecting includes a wide range of services dependent on your business needs.  These services all include the use of EPA registered, Hospital Grade disinfectants approved for use in COVID-19 in both electrostatic fogging and spray and wiping.  Carpet cleaning, and floor cleaning may be required or suggested as well, depending on the facility.  Disinfecting of all touchable areas in your building will include but not be limited to: walls, doors, door handles, light switches, windows, tables, table tops, chairs, sinks, cabinets, filing cabinets, computer keyboards and mouse, phones, printers, lunch rooms, bathroom stalls and machinery.  Our technicians follow all OSHA regulations, as well as guidance from the CDC.

What businesses we can help

SERVPRO technicians are capable of helping many different types of businesses with our services.  We can effectively disinfect offices, salons, and small stores as well as large manufacturing facilities, warehouses, restaurants, and schools.  All businesses in the state of Texas have at least these things in common:  employees and being affected by COVID-19.

Preventative Vs. Reactive

Preventative disinfecting is a service made for businesses that have not experienced a positive or suspected COVID-19.  Preventive cleaning still disinfects all touchable surfaces to treat any possible viruses that may be in your facility.  Reactive cleaning on the other handle is just that, a disinfectant service after a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19.  This disinfecting is a higher level of disinfecting, requiring the use of several types of services.  It is vital that if your business needs a reactive disinfectant cleaning to call us as soon as possible in order to correctly create a plan to reduce further contamination as well as spread of the virus.

Do You Have a Multi-Story Building?

6/12/2020 (Permalink)

Skyline of Houston We service high rises in Downtown Houston and the Galleria area.

Here at SERVPRO of  Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno, we are no stranger to working amongst the clouds. In fact, we have serviced many of the high rises in Downtown Houston and the Galleria area. What a lot of people do not know is that when there is water damage on a higher floor that water will continue to travel down the longer it sits. It does not stop just because it hits a wall. The damage will continue to follow gravity even as it is being cleaned, so it must be repaired from top to bottom not bottom to top.

For a skyscraper with a busted pipe on the highest floor, that could be as many as 40 or more floors to clean and repair! Our most recent high rise was a 22-story building that became saturated from a busted pipe near the roof. Luckily for them, SERVPRO was there and knew exactly how to handle this situation. After 2 days of cleaning and 3 days of drying, a total of 5 days the job, it was completed and life returned to normal.

Do you have a multi-story building such as an apartment or business office you would like the professionals to handle?

Why SERVPRO for your Commercial Properties?

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Restoration crew Why SERVPRO

Whether you serve customers on a daily basis or work from a private office, protecting your facility from water damage is essential for smooth daily operations. The following preventative measures can prepare your building for spring showers to come. Here is what you should know about preventing flooding at your facility.

3 Ways to Avoid Water Damage in Commercial Properties

1. Schedule Basement Repairs

If your facility has a basement, don’t forget to periodically inspect it for foundation cracks or other issues. Make sure to have any cracks patched and caulked so the room isn’t flooded after the next heavy rainstorm. You can also install a sump pump to remove excess water as well.

2. Improve Landscaping

Property elevation plays a big role in your risk for water damage. You can avoid potential flooding by altering your landscaping to ensure that water flows downhill and away from the building’s foundation. Use downspouts to direct water away from the building as well. You should also schedule a property assessment to identify flood-prone areas and then work with a landscaper to fix these issues.

3. Clear Drains & Gutters

It never hurts to look at the weather forecast. When you know rain is on the way, double-check that all gutters, drains, and downspouts are clear of leaves and other debris. This way, you won’t have to worry about clogs causing water to back up and leak into the building.

If your facility has been affected by water damage, contact  Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno  Serving Brazoria, Harris, and the surrounding areas, they provide a variety of cleanup and restoration services, including for damage from fire, water, and mold. Locally owned and operated, their IICRC certified team seeks to treat each customer as a friend of the family to give you the best quality service. Let SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno Clean and Disinfect your School of Viruses

2/13/2019 (Permalink)

back to school cleaning Please call our office at (281)412-6211 to schedule an assessment of your situation.

The CDC has posted the information on the attached link regarding the seasonal influenza occurring at our schools recently. SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland, Stafford, Missouri City North and Fresno can address this issue, as well as others, with the cleaning products we use. Our disinfectants are EPA, FDA and OSHA compliant, have a very low toxicity rating, and are effective against the most common disease and odor-causing organisms, including MRSA, HIV-1 (AIDS virus), Influenza A2, Avian Flu, VRE, TB, Herpes, and many others.

Differences between cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing

  1. Cleaning removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using soap (or detergent) and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
  2. Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
  3. Sanitizing lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces or objects to lower the risk of spreading infection.

SERVPRO can address these issues in an educational environment, business environment, or any other setting where many are working in close contact with others.  SERVPRO can clean and disinfect the surroundings to prevent the spread of these viruses.

Please Kimberly at 281-520-8197 or Madeline 281-520-8196 to schedule an assessment of your situation.

HVAC and Air Duct System will start to slowly collect dirt and debris, the cumulative effect of this over time can lead to considerable energy loss.

Your HVAC and Air Duct System will start to slowly collect dirt and debris, the cumulative effect of this over time can lead to considerable energy loss.

Health and energy efficiency is a major concern for many Houston property owners and managers. It is becoming increasingly important to clean and maintain your HVAC and Air Duct systems to avoid any negative impact it could have on the health and efficiency of your local Houston occupants.

As much as half of the energy used in your home or business goes to heating and cooling. Making smart decisions about your heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort.

BENEFITS OF OUR HEALTH & ENERGY EFFICIENCY SERVICES

  • Restore peak energy efficiency & lower energy costs
  • Eliminate allergens and odors
  • Reduce the potential for mold growth

Through normal HVAC use dirt and debris will start to slowly collect on the surfaces of your HVAC components, these contaminants if not properly maintained can cause a degradation of the efficiency of the entire system. The cumulative effect of this over time can lead to considerable energy loss and can be a contributor to higher energy bills for your Houston home or business. In addition, allergy and asthma sufferers, young children, and other occupants with breathing difficulties are more susceptible to poor indoor air quality. We have been cleaning and servicing local Houston HVAC and Air Ducts for years keeping homes and business's air quality comfortable and efficient.

COMMON PROBLEM AREAS

These are common problem areas that contribute to restricted airflow, increased energy consumption, and reduced equipment longevity:

  • Duct and System Leakage
  • Closed, Clogged or Stuck Dampers
  • Filtration Issues
  • Excess or Damaged Ductwork
  • Failed Duct Liner
  • Clogged/Nonfunctioning Exhaust Systems

SERVPRO of Friendswood/Pearland professionals can perform an inspection to access your system and determine the depth of your problem and if your system could benefit from our cleaning and maintenance services. If moisture is present, the potential for mold growth is increased, sending spores into your working or living spaces, creating a much larger problem.

HVAC AND AIR DUCT CLEANING

Generally, refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans, fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.

PARTS OF AN HVAC UNIT THAT CAN BENEFIT FROM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE:

  • EVAPORATOR COIL: particle buildup can have an insulating effect on the surface of the coil, leading to longer cooling times and greater energy consumption.
  • HEATING COIL: dust and dirt will accumulate and clog air passages this restricts air flow and the furnace must run longer to reach desired temperatures. If a coil is severely impacted by debris, it can cause the unit to malfunction.
  • DAMPERS AND TURNING VANES: these elements ensure proper airflow throughout your system, particles or larger debris like insulation can obstruct or diminish airflow, leading to an overall degradation of the entire system.
  • AIR REGISTERS: dust and debris can accumulate on the blades and seriously reduce air flow, negatively impacting overall energy performance and comfort levels in the space.
  • FRESH AIR INTAKE SCREEN: these openings are integral to the quality of air inside your building, they quickly become clogged from environmental debris and buildup inhibits proper fresh air from entering the system.
  • FAN AND BLOWERS: particle buildup can reduce the capacity of the blades to move adequate air causing the blower motor to run longer while pushing less air per rotation.

When HVAC systems are cleaned of dirt and debris, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperatures, air can flow more freely. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness, longer operating life, as well as health benefits and energy savings.

Our team of professionals can inspect your HVAC or air duct system and access your specific situation and work with you to provide a solution to keep your business air quality healthy and energy efficient. The exact solution for your property will depend on a few factors, including the size of your overall duct and vent system, how accessible your HVAC system is to our technicians, and the level of maintenance required.
